Electron-beam excited x-ray micro-analysis is a well-established tool for materials research in R&D labs and industry. For this application, the Mercury offers the unique features of high resolution and high count rate spectroscopy for rapid elemental analysis, combined with dead-time-free fast mapping data collection, from which 2D elemental images of the specimen can be created. The low-noise input of the Mercury allows identification and analysis of elements on the periodic table down to Beryllium, (110 eV x-ray).

X-ray fluorescence is employed in various industrial processes. One example is large scale metal sorting using a conveyor belt system, which typically uses an x-ray tube source and an array of x-ray detectors to measure the characteristic fluorescence from scrap metal. XIA is uniquely positioned to address this type of embedded application with the OEM Mercury processor card, or the xMap card when a high number of detector channels is required. The rapid handling and storage of data from multiple detectors facilitates real-time control of mechanical systems for metal sorting. Digital I/O lines are available for equipment control and feedback. For some industrial systems, the use of multiple low cost and compact microDXP boards provides another option.
Synchrotron light sources throughout the world provide a powerful tool for studying materials with an intense, polarized x-ray beam. XIA has manufactured equipment for synchrotron research since the founding of the company. Over the years, increasing beam intensity has pushed the development of high rate and high resolution signal processing electronics. Detector systems with multiple channels (100 or more) are also common place. The xMap signal processor has established XIA as the leader in spectroscopy electronics for multi-element HPGe x-ray detectors and SDDs used in synchrotron research. The Mercury processor is also an established solution for single detectors, with both the Mercury and Xmap being controllable by EPICS software. More recently, the FalconX8 has emerged to offer extremely high data throughput capability with over 4 Mcps output count rate with relatively low dead-time.
